Accountability

Moving beyond upward reporting to donors towards accountability to communities, partners and local constituencies.

Accountability is about who can ask questions, influence decisions and obtain a response. Reporting to funders is one part of this. Locally led action also requires accessible ways for communities and partners to shape priorities, raise concerns and see what changes.

Questions for practice

To whom is an organisation accountable? Can people safely challenge decisions or raise complaints? Are feedback processes accessible in relevant languages? How do organisations explain decisions and demonstrate that feedback has influenced their work?

What ILLA explores

ILLA examines community engagement, social accountability and mutual accountability in partnerships. We focus on how feedback connects to decisions, and how institutions recognise and respond to different local constituencies.
